Buffalo Competition 2009

The fourth annual 'Buffalo Shoot' took place on 22 March 2009 at the Barnwell Range. This competition tries to recreate the challenge faced by hunters in the old wild-west within the constraints of our 100 yard facility at Barnwell. The targets used in this competition are an A3 'Buffalo' image with appropriate scoring rings to approximate a scale distance of around 300yds.

The competition is open to any traditional, open-sighted rifle with a calibre greater than .40" calibre i.e. Falling Block, Rolling Block or Under-lever rifles. 10 competitors stepped forward this year to compete for the club trophy, together with individual trophies and prizes for the top three shooters.

The 30-round course-of-fire required 10-shots prone at 100yds, 10-shots sitting at 75yds and 10-shots standing at 50yds. The larger 45-70 calibre rifles generally remained on top form, but an underlever in the traditional western calibre of 44-40 produced a fine third place.

Tips for next year?

  • Make sure you know your zeros and check them at all three distances
  • Practice in all three positions
We hope to run this one again later in the year just-for-fun so if you have a traditional iron sighted rifle of over .40" calibre, why not come on down and try your luck and get some practice in for 2010!
